This is the Louis and LaVerta Langenberg Farm. They moved here in 1958. My sister and I now own the farm. The farmland is rented by Tom and Malinda Thimmes. The old house is no longer there, a new one was built to the left of that. The barn is gone also. And of course many of the trees thanks to the Derecho. A lot of great memories!!!

Hello Karen,
Is the farm still active today? What type of farming was done here over the years?

Dad had a few cows when they moved there in 1958, but they weren't for him. He raised hogs. Plus corn and oats were his crops. We had a huge vegetable garden between the old house and the wire corncrib. There were sheep also in the front pasture for a long time. The original hog house is still there, you just can't see it behind the barn; It's next to the wooden corn crib. and of course some of the other buildings have changed/updated or been replaced/torn down. Dad worked a full time job in Cedar Rapids also. He retired from work and farming when he was 62. The farm has had two different renters; the current renters plant corn and soybeans in rotation. They are our caretakers. There is clover in the front pasture and any other open spaces around the pole barn which they bale for their cattle.

A new house was built in 1975 to the left of the old farmhouse. Next to the trees on the left hand side of the picture is the slough. This extends to the dirt road to the south and the lane. On the other side of the lane is the pasture area that extends to the gravel road to the south.
