27032 N. Gilmer Rd., looking west. Originally built in 1928 as a school, it was eventually converted to a single family home and is still there.

The Maple Grove School (formerly Ames School) was dedicated in November 1925 on the property of Levi Price (1826-1916) and Harriet Elizabeth "Hattie" Price (1840-1926), his sister, located in the southwest corner of Section 27 of Fremont Township. In 1924, the 200 farm property was sold to a Mr. Crane. Their parents, James C. Price (1803-1883) and Jane (Carver) Price (1807-1895) purchased the property from the U.S. Government in 1844 coming from Pennsylvania and New York, prior. Hattie had been a school teacher for almost 20 years teaching at Swan, Price, Diamond Lake and Marsh schools in the area.

According to the Lake County Register (Libertyville IL) Wednesday, November 4, 1925:
"These records were very unique and interesting. They recorded the first school built in 1849 where the first teacher received the sum of $18.70 for the first term ending in December and had to "find" himself. There is a record of a school as early as 1846 and Mrs. Janet Smith of Libertyville is the only scholar left, who remembers it. Later in 1859 another school house was built and has been in use until the new one built this year. We were so fortunate as to have Miss Hattie Price and her brother Lewis at this gathering. Miss Price taught many terms in the old school house and looked about the pride on many of her old scholars who are now grandfathers and grandmothers. The cost of the first school house was $6.00 and the new one cost $6,175. Some difference in the new equipment also. A fine basement, with closed coal bins, a furnace, a closed cistern with a filter, so the water may be used for drinking, also a fine white porcelain sink with a pump all in the basement. The school room with a cloak room for the girls and one for the boys with a library between and sanitary toilets for each. It was decided to have a name for the new school and it was decided to call it the Maple Grove school, which is very appropriate as the school yard is surrounded by lovely maple trees."

Maple Grove school district No. 80 merged with Gould school district No. 82 in 1939. The Maple Grove school would continue holding classes. In 1957, all one-room schools were closed and the schools of Fremont Township were consolidated into School District 79.

The Price family members are buried in the Ivanhoe Cemetery, located next to the Ivanhoe Congregation Church on Route 176 near the Schrank Ave. intersection west of Mundelein.

I'm curious about this one Room School house. I believe this is the second one I attended just before it closed. Our teacher's name was Mrs. Pinkerton she taught kindergarten- eighth grades. A really sweet lady. The house was set back in the woods with a slanting driveway up to the building. I also believe there might have been a creek somewhere behind the building.

My ancestor Henry Ames 1802-1875 lived just north east of this and the "Ames School" was named after him. He also taught there, as did some of his grandchildren, and others family attended there as well.
