Amtrak train with two dome cars
View looks SE. AMTRAK running north on the Illinois Central Gulf (ex-Gulf, Mobile & Ohio/Chicago & Alton) Chicago to St. Louis mainline. Train is crossing WOLF CREEK, and the border between Sangamon and Logan Counties. This is just north of Williamsville, Illinois. That is U.S. Route 66 in foreground. Today, the NB lanes of 66 is the frontage road to I-55, and the old SB lanes are where the current NB lanes of I-55 are located today. Look closely in the lower RH corner, you can see the grading for the new I-55. The road crossing, behind the last car, has been 'cut' due to the 'high speed' rebuilding of the railroad between Joliet and Alton. At the time of this photo, I-55 has yet to be built south of Bloomington, IL. The abandoned Illinois Terminal Company right-of-way is marked by the small bridge located just to the east of the ICG tracks (just above the E-unit roof line in photo).
