That is the former Hunter School at the corner of IL Route 4 and Hunter School Road. I read somewhere that the schoolhouse was built about 1923, but according to old Madison County plat maps there was a school there as far back as 1873, but most of the old plats indicate the school building on the north side of Hunter School Road. School was in session there until 1948 when there were maybe a half dozen pupils. An old archived article from the Edwardsville Intelligencer from 1932 says the enrollment for that year was just 6, all boys! In 1948 the Hunter School, Frey School and Quieve Vive (sp?) all consolidated with the St. Jacob School which later in 1954 became part of the new Triad School district. A past owner of the Hunter School place told me he thought the school was converted to a house around 1957. When it was built around 1923 only Hunter School Road passed by it. Route 4 did not exist there at the time and there was not even a township road running north/south at that location. Only Hunter School Road which runs east/west. The small room extension on the southside (not seen here) I don't think is original to the structure, but even back in the school days there was always a small lean-to type room there, which a former student said was where they kept coal for the heating stove. I've seen an aireal view of the place from around 1940. It's from pretty high up, but it sure looks like at the time the school house had a belfry at the east end of the rooftop. Of course there was no other building at the time, but just from talking with one of the former owners and knowing how it looks today, it's quite obvious that the garage has had more than one makeover in its lifetime. I hope to hear from some former pupils of the school. I know there can't be too many left, but certainly a few.
