This was the former Freed School, named for the Freed family who owned land nearby. The school was part of the old McLean County district 4, before country schools were consolidated. The building was constructed in 1915 at a cost of $5,000 and was classified as a "standard" school, meaning its facilities were under the supervision of the Illinois education department. The school was considered a "model" rural school. This was unusual for a country school, as few were constructed with brick exterior. The 30x60 foot structure also had a basement.

A photo of the new school was published by The Pantagraph newspaper (Bloomington, IL) on November 3, 1915, about a week after its formal dedication.
