In the lower-left, concealed in the trees, is the former Crossroads School, at the intersection of Fisher and Crossroads roads. The school operated at least through the 1955-56 school year, when the Freeport Journal-Standard newspaper reported that Robert Hughes would represent Crossroads at the Lena-Winslow spelling bee (Journal-Standard 4/10/1956). The school had apparently been closed at some point prior to the 1952-53 school year, as the Journal-Standard reported that Crossroads would be reopened that year to 1st through 4th grades, in order to reduce enrollment at other area schools.

Eventually the school closed and was sold at auction to Earl Schoney for $350 in the spring of 1958. A photo of the school as it was in 1918 is archived on the Lena-Winslow school district website:

These photos originated from a 1918-19 Stephenson County school directory. It contained photos of each school, along with the names of teachers and school board members.
