This is a photo of my grandfather's farm on the Capen Road in South Gardiner. He was Merton Small, or Papa Small to us young ones. The farmhouse and barn are both still standing -- though just barely. Over on the far side of the barn, away from the house, is Papa's wood pile. Each summer the menfolk would saw these long logs into cordwood using a rusty circular saw blade hooked up to the rear wheel of an old pickup truck ... a Model A, I think. As for this photo, my grandfather had a copy of it on the wall in his living room.
