My grandparents, Edward and Julia Hopka, purchased this 40 acre farm in 1947. His family had rented this land and farmed it when he was a boy and they had lived on the 80 acre farm next to it. In 1957, the Highway Department purchased 8 acres of his land for the construction of the new I-75 freeway. Edward also sold one acre to his daughter and son-in-law for construction of their family home. I grew up in this home. My grandfather grew wheat, field corn, soy beans, and hay. He raised chickens and sold the eggs. He had a large vegetable garden which allowed us to can pickles and tomatoes each year. He also had grape vines and many fruit trees on his property. My grandfather sold the property in 1989. The new owner sold the property several years later. Apartments and condominiums were then built on the farmland. In 2023, my younger brother now owns our childhood home and lives next to the condominiums. Memories are the only thing left of grandpa’s farm.
