Worked there for 8 years. WPCQ - People Call It Quits

Hi John,

Thanks for sharing your memory with us! What was it like working there for 8 years? We'd love to know more about your experience in Mecklenburg County. Since the photo was taken in 1987, do you remember any major changes that have happened since then? We always love to hear stories about how the area has changed over the years.

Well... I remember there was lots of booze, parties, illicit activities and I'm pretty sure that several children were conceived there. I learned a lot about wrestling, news, making deals and the underbelly of the broadcasting business. That building could tell some stories. Today, the building houses a lawn mower repair business. That's about it.

I interviewed at Hood Road for my job at WCNC. The first person I met was Larry Sprinkle. He was coming down the stairs to the lobby area. He recognized me and ask who I was. I told him I worked at WTVI and Larry was at our studio to do the auction we did every year. Larry and I became good friends.

I worked there when it was WRET ( Robert E Turner) named after Ted Turner the owner and was there when Larry Sprinkle was hired. Also when we changed the call letters to WPCQ (people of the Queen City). 1979-80 as Creative Services Director. I have huge scrapbook of that year. Wrestling and Dialing for Dollars.

Dear Maria, thank you for sharing your memories with us! It sounds like you have a treasure trove of history in your scrapbook. Can you tell us more about what Mecklenburg County was like during 1979-80? How has the area changed since then?
