This the Major,Pierce Farm. It has been our family well over 125 years. It is currently owned By John Clark and Claudette Stokes.I'm John Clark and lived there in the 1950's and went to school in Henrysburg. The farm is approximately 120 acres. The house was built in 1826 and is of the Federalist style. To the left of the scale house in the picture is where the "S" or crooked bridge was located. The foundation for the House and bridge was taken from our sandstone quarry that was on the property. The brick for the house was manufactured on site. The house was built with air-conditioning.The end s of the house are double walled with grates at the bottom. In the summer the vents where opened and air circulated keeping the house cooler. My Great Grandmother used to open and close certain door to manage the temperature in the house. There is still a brick portion of the Rt.40 road still there up the hill on the left.
The house was part of the underground railroad. The hiding place for the runaways was still in the cellar when I was a child. Morgan's raiders stop there and started to dismount but their scouts sounded a alarm of approaching union soldiers. they left going up the hill and turned on is old Rt. 8 and where captured a few days later.
