My grandfather and his brother purchased this property at Sheriff's auction - I believe in the 70's. It was then known as "The old Estep Dairy Farm," which had been a Grade B dairy. My parents moved into the house, which had been a rental for many years, in the early 80's. I have lived here since - over 30 years! My husband and I are working to preserve the barn. The silo was taken down due to structural issues in the 1980's. The old corn crib/wagon shed is currently coming down as the foundation was not salvageable. The pump and hen houses (located behind the main house) are still standing. The original property was about 85 acres, only 26 of which remain with the property today. Based upon my grandmother's research, the home was originally built in the late 1800's. As you can see in this photograph, the property suffered a great deal from neglect. The pastures had gone to brush and the buildings were quite run down. Of the 26 acres that we own, at least 22 of those acres were unusable when we initially moved to the property. Thorny View Farm, as we now call it (due to the Honey Locust trees that grow there) is no longer over run with multiflora rose bushes. Instead, the property is made up of multiple pastures, which are rotationally grazed.
