Old hardware store in Aniwa, one of the previous owners were Stefanskis.

The house in the background was my great grandmas, my aunt was living there at this time. The hardware burned in 1982.

Hi Jesse,
Did they replace the Hardware store with anything after 1982? Does your family still live in this area?

Jim Kautza owns the furniture shop that is where the hardware was.

My Dad, Leonard Kautza, owned the Grocery store, the Hardware store, the Feed store and the bank building at one time. I think many of you know the grocery store was on the other side of the street from that picture. The grocery store was first, then the feed store and at the end of the building, by the corner, sat the bank. Dad later moved the hardware across the street and sold it to Stefanski’s. Then he sold the feed store and it moved to the current location. The bank became the Oak Outlet… and that’s how it went.

Hi Rita!
Do you have any memories about growing up in Marathon County during that time period? What changes have you noticed in the area since 1979? Vintage Aerial is always curious to learn more about the rich history of our aerial photos.

Seeing this photo really sparks memories
I step out of the front door to that hardware in November and a deer was running from the lake up the side walk almost ran me over. Each morning the towns kids would all meet by the van to catch the bus to school. Wow the names that come back like Calhoun’s how the nicknames we all had seams nobody went by our real names. Except the girls I don’t believe any of them had a nickname.
