McCollum Grocery, no longer there.
This is my family’s land, my grandparents ran the general store (which was a wood store with a front porch from the 1920s) Robert and Estelle Burns. After my grandfather died grandma had the cinder block store built, she was also the postmistress in the store. My grandmother died around 1988. We leased it for several years and then had it torn down. My great grand parents Sims built the house to the right. My mother was born there. My grandparents and great grandparents with my mom lived there until 1953 when they built a house to the left 100 yards, which is still lived in. The old house to the right (the Sims house) is still there and in disrepair.
Hi Melanie, thanks for sharing your family's history with us! It's fascinating to hear about the store and the post office. Did you or any other family members ever work there? We'd love to hear more about what life was like growing up in that area. Also, have you noticed any changes in the surrounding land since the photo was taken in 1988?
The Sims house is very over grown, you can hardly see it. Would love if someone wanted the wood, lots of bead board. The field behind and most of the 350 acres have been planted in pine. None of us grandkids worked in the store but we got lots of free candy when we were kids and visited in the summer. We did not live close. My mom would work there before she left for college. She was their only child.
